Spider-Man: Brand New Day Review: A Fresh Chapter for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth Spider-Man film in his Marvel journey. This time, however, there is a significant change behind the camera. Destin Daniel Cretton, known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, takes over directing duties from Jon Watts, who guided Holland through his first three adventures.
Cretton maintains much of the energy and youthful spirit associated with Holland’s Spider-Man while introducing his own filmmaking style. The result feels like a new chapter for the character without completely abandoning what worked in the earlier movies.
A New Chapter After No Way Home
Holland’s Spider-Man made a strong impression when Spider-Man: Homecoming arrived in 2017. The film offered something different from previous versions of the character, particularly because Holland convincingly portrayed Peter as a teenager. Its combination of high-school comedy, coming-of-age elements, and Marvel superhero action gave the movie a distinctive identity.
Spider-Man: Far From Home continued the story in 2019, although it did not quite reach the same level as its predecessor. Two years later, Spider-Man: No Way Home delivered a much larger and more emotional experience, combining fan-focused moments with a surprisingly personal story about Peter Parker.
Brand New Day follows the consequences of those events.
After the events of No Way Home, the world has forgotten Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man. Unfortunately for Peter, that also means losing his closest relationships. Ned and MJ no longer remember their connection to him, leaving Peter to face a much lonelier version of his life.
As the new movie begins, Peter has largely accepted this isolated existence. Meanwhile, Ned and MJ have moved forward with their own lives in New York. Peter still keeps track of them from a distance, creating an emotional situation that is both comforting and painful for him.
Spider-Man Takes Center Stage
Much of the movie’s story remains intentionally mysterious, allowing the audience to discover the larger developments while watching. At its heart, however, Brand New Day is another story about Peter trying to balance his responsibilities as Spider-Man with his personal life.
Several familiar Marvel characters appear along the way. Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner, while Jon Bernthal once again plays Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher. Michael Mando also appears as Mac Gargan, the character associated with Scorpion.
The supporting cast includes Liza Colón-Zayas, Sadie Sink, and Tramell Tillman, adding several new personalities to Peter’s latest adventure.
Some of these characters feel more important than others, and not every addition seems essential to the central story. Nevertheless, they help expand the world around Holland’s Spider-Man.
Tom Holland Remains the Heart of the Film
The biggest strength of Brand New Day continues to be Tom Holland himself.
Holland has developed a version of Peter Parker who feels vulnerable, funny, inexperienced, and genuinely human. While fans may continue debating whether Holland, Tobey Maguire, or Andrew Garfield is the definitive Spider-Man, Holland has clearly made the role his own.
Maguire benefits from years of nostalgia, while Garfield’s interpretation has arguably received less appreciation than it deserves. Holland, meanwhile, brings a different quality to Peter, particularly when the character is dealing with loneliness and personal sacrifice.
The relationships between Peter, Ned, and MJ remain especially important. Even when the superhero spectacle becomes familiar, Holland’s emotional performance gives the character a reason for the audience to care.
Action, Effects and Pacing
There are several entertaining action sequences throughout the movie, and fans of Spider-Man’s superhero abilities will find plenty to enjoy. However, some of the visual effects can feel familiar, particularly after so many superhero movies have relied on similar digital spectacle.
The bigger issue is pacing.
Unlike the earlier Holland movies, Brand New Day occasionally struggles to maintain a consistent rhythm. Certain scenes seem to last longer than necessary, while other developments appear to move too quickly. Some story elements also feel as though they were added without being fully integrated into the main narrative.
This prevents the movie from reaching the same level of balance achieved by Homecoming and No Way Home.
Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day Worth Watching?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels deliberately different from Holland’s previous Spider-Man adventures. It is not necessarily trying to recreate the formula of Homecoming or No Way Home, and that separation gives the film its own identity.
At the same time, it is arguably the weakest entry in Holland’s Spider-Man series. That does not mean the movie lacks enjoyable moments. The action is entertaining, Holland remains excellent in the lead role, and the emotional connection between Peter and the people he has lost continues to provide the story with genuine weight.
The film’s biggest achievement is that it remembers Spider-Man is more than a superhero.
Final Thoughts
One of the strongest qualities of Holland’s Spider-Man movies has always been their ability to make Peter Parker feel like an ordinary person beneath the costume. The superhero identity is important, but the person carrying that responsibility matters just as much.
Brand New Day continues that tradition. Even when the plot becomes crowded and the pacing loses focus, Peter’s personal struggles keep the story grounded.
For longtime Spider-Man fans, the film may not surpass the best moments of Holland’s earlier adventures, but it still offers an interesting new stage in his journey. More importantly, it reinforces the idea that behind every superhero is a human being dealing with choices, relationships, loss, and responsibility.
