The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Release Date, Rumours & Trailers

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will be the first MCU show on Disney Plus - find out all about what's in store for this superhero series

Marvel is one of the biggest draws of Disney Plus, with a whole host of live-action shows planned to air over the next few years. The first to kick off will be The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, following the flying ex-soldier Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Cap’s best friend and former foe, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).
This will be the first of many shows to play an integral part of phase four of the MCU, with seven other titles confirmed for 2020 and 2021. But what exactly will The Falcon and the Winter Soldier be about, and when will it kick off? We’ve drilled the internet for all the details you need.

When Does The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Start?
Disney announced in their first quarter earnings report that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was originally set to premiere on the streaming platform in August 2020.

The actors confirmed that filming kicked off at the start of November. Of course, production was brought to a halt due to the ongoing pandemic, and EW has now confirmed that the show has been delayed to an unspecified date.
Whilst the show has been delayed, comicbookmovie.com states that there were only nine days left of filming in the Czech Republic - so once they're able to pick up again the show should still hit a 2020 release date.

The series will consist of six episodes, and Anthony Mackie described the show as "a six or eight-hour movie" in an interview with Variety. Considering that it costs $150 million to make, its no wonder.

Disney Plus Originals typically roll out on a weekly basis every Friday, something we suspect will be the same for this show.

Trailers And Posters
Whilst we've not got a full dedicated trailer for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, we do have a teaser for several upcoming Marvel shows on Disney+, which includes several clips from the show. Take a look below (and get a bonus look at WandaVision and Loki as well).
In the footage we see Sam Wilson taking the infamous shield for a spin, and flying away from some hostiles. We get a glimpse of Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), the villain of Captain America: Civil War, and presumably the big bad of this show as well. We also see a very bizarre clip of what looks like a football stadium celebrating someone dressed as Captain America... more on this later.

We also have a teaser poster, giving us a glimpse at what the two characters look like:
There was also a short clip shown at San Diego Comic Con of Baron Zemo. In the video he teased joining the cast of the show, and also showed off the notorious purple mask as seen in the comics.
How To Watch The Falcon And The Winter Soldier
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be exclusive to Disney+, so you’ll need to sign up for an account with the streaming service if you want to watch it.

The service costs £5.99/$6.99 a month or £59.99/$69.99 a year, undercutting other streaming rivals by quite a bit. Take a look at everything you need to know about Disney Plus for more information.

By the time The Falcon and the Winter Soldier launches, most countries should have access to Disney+.

What Do We Know About The Plot Of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier?
Spoilers for past films in the MCU, including Avengers: Endgame from here on out.

As of yet, not a whole lot unfortunately. The appearance of the shield in the title image for the show indicates that both Sam and Bucky will be dealing with the aftermath of the absence of Cap now that he’s loving life in retirement; especially considering that the shield was passed on to Sam Wilson.

This is actually a plot from one of the comics, in which Falcon takes up the mantle of Cap, wearing his own red, white and blue getup, combining the all-American shield and his mechanical wings into a new style of superhero.

Writer Marc Bernadin claimed in a podcast that the show may explore the government's disapproval of Wilson becoming the new Captain America, which would make sense considering their aversion to superheroes in previous films. We imagine that the show will also plant the seeds for Falcon to act as Cap in the big future MCU team-up movies - AKA, the untitled fifth Avengers film.

This theory is further supported by the fact that MCU insider Charles Murphy seems to believe that series will get a name change if its renewed for a second season. Perhaps 'Captain America and The White Wolf'?.

Concept art for the show has also revealed that the government will have plans to replace Captain America with their own equivalent: John Walker/US Agent (Wyatt Russell). We won't spoil his role from the comics, but we have a feeling that he's bad news.

As for Bucky? Well, as we’re seeing the return of Zemo, we can’t help but wonder if Bucky will be dragged back into his PTSD phase of The Winter Soldier using the mind techniques that were brought to fruition in Civil War. Or perhaps we’ll see Bucky actually acclimatising to the world a little bit. After all, he’s spent the majority of his time on the run and in hiding on Wakanda.

Another character confirmed for the series is Sharon Carter (Emily Van Camp), who will likely be the point of contact in S.H.I.E.L.D that Barnes and Wilson report to for their missions. Hopefully these antics will make us all forget about the sort of incestuous plot line between her and Steve Rogers... *shudders*.

Carl Lumbly - best known for his role on Supergirl - will also be joining the fold according to Deadline. We don't yet know who he'll be, but rumours circulating indicate he could possibly be an older version of Isaiah Bradley - a character from the short comic series Truth: Red, White, & Black, in which African Americans are used as test subjects for Super Soldier serum by the government.

Other actors confirmed to star in the series include Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa and Noah Mills. We don't know yet what their roles will be - but no doubt more plot points will emerge over the coming months.
