Windows 10's New Start Menu Is A Welcome Update

The Start Menu has always been one of the most important aspects of Windows, and it's getting a big refresh in the next update. However, this will be irrelevant without a stable operating system for it to run on.

Microsoft is encouraging users to voice their opinions on the new Windows 10 Start menu, one of the major design changes coming to the operating system.

The six-second clip shows off a whole new set of icons, as well as indicating how the menu will transition between a light and dark mode.

However, the most notable change is the refinements to Live Tiles. These were the defining aesthetic of Windows 8, and have been an ever-present in the Start menu since Windows 10 was launched in 2015.

While some people would like Live Tiles to be discarded altogether, Microsoft will focus on making them genuinely useful, avoiding the irrelevant information that is all too often displayed in the current version.

The feedback so far seems to have been broadly positive, but there's no doubt users would trade these cosmetic changes in an instant for an operating system they can rely on.

Microsoft has faced intense scrutiny in recent months after Windows 10 has suffered from a number of stability issues. One recent issue caused some devices to disconnect from the internet spontaneously, which proved particularly problematic with so many people working from home. Additionally, an optional update rolled out last month even exacerbated some of the issues it was meant to fix.

Windows 10's position as the most popular desktop operating system is unlikely to be under threat anytime soon, but Microsoft must be careful to avoid complacency as they cater to record numbers of people logging on every day.

This update is expected in the coming weeks, although no date has been confirmed yet.
