The best SUV to drive in this class, the Macan lacks more practical considerations.

The 2022 Porsche Macan is a small crossover SUV that puts an emphasis on drivability and sporty performance. That gives it a bit less utility than some competitors, but it’s also the most fun SUV to drive in its class of luxury compact crossovers. Competitors include the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Alfa Romeo Stelvio. 

Is the 2022 Porsche Macan a good car?
The Macan is the premiere choice in this class for those who put a premium on performance. But this singular focus comes at a price, as it is less comfortable and gets expensive very quickly thanks to a buffet of options. We rate it a 6.8 out of 10 overall.

What's new for the 2022 Porsche Macan?
The Macan gets a minor refresh for 2022 that includes some new styling touches, interior technology updates, and a small power bump for most models. The refresh also shuffles around the SUV’s trim levels with the Macan Turbo saying goodbye, leaving the Macan GTS at the top of the pile.

There are small tweaks to the exterior including a more prominent rear diffuser, 3D texturing on the prominent side trim pieces, and seven new wheel designs, including a standard 19-inch wheel. It remains a very sporty take on an SUV, with a hard sloping rear and body curves meant to evoke comparisons to Porsche’s sports cars. Inside, the center console has been updated with haptic buttons and a 10.9-inch touchscreen.

The base Macan features a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that gets a small power bump to 261 hp for 2022, as does the Macan S which adopts the 375-hp 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 from last year’s GTS model. Not wanting to feel left out, the GTS takes the engine from last year’s Macan Turbo, an up-tuned version of the V-6 that makes 434-hp. 

A 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox is the only available transmission and all-wheel drive comes standard. Similar to last year’s model, the Macan’s balance and handling are an absolute delight. It drives superbly for any kind of vehicle, let alone an SUV. 

This being a Porsche, prepare to pay extra for any kind of cosmetic customizations, interior features, or safety technology (including automatic forward emergency braking). Heated front seats, auto dimming mirrors, and keyless entry are standard. 

How much does the 2022 Porsche Macan cost?
The base model starts at $56,250 (including destination charges) and the Macan S at $66,750. The new top of the Macan lineup, the GTS, starts at $81,250.

Is the Porsche Macan a good-looking car?
It’s hard to make an SUV look good, but the Macan does a good job of shrinking down the Cayenne with better proportions and an appealing interior. We give it a 7 out of 10.

The slight styling changes for 2022 give the Macan a bit more curb appeal, but your general opinion of it won’t be swayed either way. Adding some 3D texturing to the side blades helps them to stand out and the rear diffuser has crept up the back bumper to make it more prominent.

Larger changes happen inside, where the center console now features a wide array of haptic touch controls instead of being overwhelmed by buttons. It makes the panel look more cohesive. But in practice, these controls are a little harder to use and the panel collects fingerprints like stamps.


The Macan proves that SUVs can be fun from behind the wheel.

How fast is the Porsche Macan?

That will entirely depend on which model you select. The base model is quick enough, but the Macan S and GTS are real speedsters. We give the 2022 Macan an 8 out of 10 for its superb handling, ride quality, and power.

For 2022, the Macan, Macan S, and Macan GTS all see a power boost. The base model’s 2.0-liter turbo-4 outputs 261 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, improvements of 13 hp and 22 lb-ft respectively. The Macan S raided the closet of last year’s GTS model and came out with its 375-hp, 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 under the hood. That engine makes 383 lb-ft of torque, giving the Macan S a 27-hp and 29 lb-ft jump for this year. The GTS also uses the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6, but it’s been boosted up to 434 hp and 405 lb-ft, giving it a significant speed advantage. It makes the run from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, compared to 4.4 for the Macan S (and 5.8 seconds for the Macan). All of those times are about half a second faster than last year’s Macans.

The only transmission option is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic that is absolutely superb. The shift logic and speed with which it changes gear are fantastic, though in the city it can be a bit jerky if you leave the Macan in Sport mode.

Ride and handling are also a step above any of the Macan’s competitors. The steering feels direct and communicative, while the ride remains comfortable without any hint of sloppiness. Adaptive dampers are standard on the Macan S and available on the base model, while the GTS features a standard sport air suspension that lowers the ride height by 0.4 inch and keeps body roll firmly at bay.

There is no more carbon ceramic brake option. Instead Porsche offers a surface-coated brake package.

Comfort & Quality

The best seat in the house is the one behind the wheel.

We give the Macan a 7 out of 10 here for its comfortable front seats and cargo capacity.

While the Macan’s front accommodations are rather spacious, the back seat leaves much to be desired. Limited leg room and head room make it hard for adults to fit comfortably on longer trips, and fitting a large car seat in there will be tricky.

There is 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which expands to 53.0 cubic feet with the seats folded down. These numbers lag behind competitors.

The interior is finely outfitted with luxury materials and precision craftsmanship, and shoppers have the ability to customize the look and feel of nearly every surface and dial.


The Macan has not been crash tested, and doesn’t come with many standard safety features.

How safe is the Porsche Macan?
The NHTSA and IIHS have not yet crash tested the 2022 Macan.

From a features standpoint, the Macan is lacking. Front and rear parking sensors, lane-departure warnings, and auto dimming mirrors come standard, but notably absent from this list is automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, and active lane control can be added, but for them not to be standard on a vehicle this expensive is disappointing.


The Macan comes with a decent standard feature set, but options are expensive and the price climbs quickly.

The Macan’s standard features list is pretty strong, with a 10.9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay (though no Android Auto), navigation, heated front seats, power liftgate, and 19-inch wheels. It earns an 8 out of 10 for these features, its large infotainment screen, and an extensive options list.

Which Porsche Macan should I buy?
Considering that most folks are looking at a Macan for what it drives, not what it has, the Macan S is the sweet spot of performance and price. One can be had for around $70,000 with a few creature comforts and safety features added, like the adaptive air suspension, a surround-view camera, and additional drive modes. But as the price climbs higher and higher it gets dangerously close to GTS territory and at that point, things start to get fuzzy.

How much is a fully loaded 2022 Porsche Macan?
The Macan GTS starts at around $80,000, adding surface coated brakes, the adaptive air suspension, and 21-inch wheels. But if you check all the boxes it can reach dizzying heights quickly and tops out near $120,000.

Fuel Economy

The Macan’s focus on performance comes at the expense of fuel economy.

Is the Porsche Macan good on gas?
No, it is not. It’s shockingly thirsty, with even the base model and its turbo-4. It only earns a 4 out of 10.

All Macans take premium fuel, with the base car being the most efficient with EPA ratings of 19 mpg city, 25 highway, 21 combined. The Macan S and Macan GTS earn very similar ratings: 17/23/19 mpg for the former, and 17/22/19 mpg for the latter.
