Price When Reviewed

  • $149.99
Anker Soundcore's Liberty 2 Pro true wireless earbuds offer incredible sound, personalised to your own hearing profile. Wide and detailed coverage of the soundstage with great dynamic range is a real boon for a pair of budget buds such as these.

The design could certainly be improved, with a rather bulky body that protrudes from your ear and can become heavy and borderline uncomfortable when used for extended periods. However, Anker supplies a range of tips (seven sizes) and wings (three sizes) to help the Liberty 2 Pro better fit your ear canal and glue them into place - enough that you could use them for a workout, with the buds IPX4-certified for water- and sweat resistance.

They're not ugly, mind. Formed from matte black plastic with a gunmetal grey top surface, a shiny Soundcore logo glistens only where it catches the light. Visible below this grey shield, an LED shines bright as you slip the buds into their charging case, magnetically snapping into place.

Big On Battery

This is a similarly bulky yet well designed wireless charging case that operates over Qi, but there's also a USB-C fast-charging port for wired connections where a 10-minute charge gives up to 2 hours of playtime. You'll fully charge it in an hour and a half.

For some reason the USB-C port is hidden behind a fiddly rubber flap, but we do like the sliding lid that snaps satisfactorily into place.

Fully charged the Liberty 2 Pro gives up to 8 hours playback, and the case offers three full recharges, for a total listening time of 32 hours. How much power remains is confirmed by three LEDs on the side, but at this rate you've no worries about running low.

Operation

On each wireless earbud is a single customisable button, easily accessible while they're plugged into your ears. A single tap plays or pauses a track or answers and ends calls, a double tap skips forward or back, and holding down the button activates the voice assistant on your phone or rejects a call.

On the down side, the buds won't automatically pause when you pull them out your ears, and you'll find it impossible to have a conversation without doing so.

Anker's Liberty 2 Pro does not have Google Assistant built-in, but in our tests interacted flawlessly with the voice assistant nevertheless. Four mics with uplink noise reduction are provided for chatting to Google or Siri or making calls, but they aren't the best quality with slightly muffled sound.

If you want to control volume from the buds themselves you need to sacrifice one of the aforementioned functions, or you can command Google Assistant or Siri to adjust the media volume. This customisation is possible in the companion Soundcore app, which also offers up a multitude of preset EQ options and access to HearID.

Custom Sound

We recommend you download the app and run through the HearID configuration process, which takes just a couple of minutes and requires you to tap the screen when you hear a sound and release when you don't. The results of the test allow Anker to map your personal hearing pattern and optimise playback for your ears, resulting in even better quality tailored audio.

Even without HearID sound quality is seriously impressive, with very good clarity and fidelity and a wide soundstage. Bass is well managed, and there's good balance with well-defined mids and highs. Much of this is thanks to a well thought out internal architecture, a unique 'Astria' coaxial configuration that directly aligns the driver module with the ear.

Anker uses a concentric design that achieves accurate highs and mids with a balanced armature driver, and tight but not overpowering bass with an 11mm dynamic driver.

Each Liberty 2 Pro bud independently connects over Bluetooth 5.0 with support for aptX, meaning CD-like sound is possible over a wireless connection when paired with transmitting devices that also support aptX. There is no active noise cancellation, but in our tests background noise rarely interfered.

Conclusion

For all the things that really matter, Anker's Soundcore Liberty 2 Pro true wireless earbuds are difficult to fault: there's clean, well-defined audio, support for Bluetooth 5.0 aptX, and the battery just keeps on going. That said, we'd like to see a more streamlined design and the addition of active noise-cancelling, and these buds might not be your first choice for making calls. All in all, though, the Liberty 2 Pro offers superb value for money.
