Best Motorola Phone For 2020

What is the best Motorola phone? There's a lot of Moto choice at many different prices. Here are the best Motorola phones you can buy

What's The Best Motorola Phone You Can Buy?
Motorola has made a great comeback in recent years to produce some of the best phones on the market. Its strength is its diversity – you can buy a £100 or £800 Moto phone depending on your needs and tastes, and still got a quality and consistent user experience.
The memories of the classic Motorola RAZR are long gone, although the RAZR made a comeback in 2019. Moto, now owned by Lenovo, focuses on a consistent design ethic, has software close to stock Android and, often, offers incredible value for money. The Moto G series is a consistently excellent choice for those looking for a genuinely excellent budget phone.

But Moto also makes the more expensive X, Z and now Edge lines to cater to all tastes. The Z line also brings the unique Moto Mod compatibility that allows you to buy and use magnetic accessories with your phone, from a zoom lens camera, to a loudspeaker, to a projector.

In order, starting with budget, the Moto range goes C, E, G, X, Z, with the Motorola One its own thing - each of the One phones focuses on a specific element of the phone with a unique feature, such as a zoom lens or an action camera. There's also now the Edge and Edge+, however, with both models now available to buy in the UK.

You can still get Moto G6 phones online at good prices, but we've not included them here as we recommend investing in a newer generation.

1. Moto G7
  • $299
The Moto G7 is not only the best Moto G phone yet, it's the best mid-range phone you can buy. Sure, you can spend over double its RRP on a OnePlus 6T but unless you desperately need the better processor, screen and cameras then the G7 is more than good enough at £239/$299.

It has Android 9 Pie, a 1080p screen, good battery life and decent performance in a premium feeling handset. This is the best value in the mid-range phone market and you won't be disappointed.

2. Motorola Edge
  • £549.99 (around $675)
Though it's more expensive than the other models in our chart, the flagship Motorola Edge does offer great value for money - compared to the Edge Plus, anyway. It features the same 6.7in OLED Endless Edge display as the Plus model, giving the phone a high-end look, and it boasts many of the features of other Motorola phones in our chart in a single package.

There's a downgrade in terms of performance, sporting a Snapdragon 765 where most rivals feature the flagship 865, and the trio of rear cameras do a decent job, but it's not what we'd class as industry-leading. It might not be perfect, but it's still a stunningly good looking, wallet-friendly flagship 5G smartphone.

3. Moto G8 Plus
  • $249
The Moto G8 Plus delivers in principal areas like photography, performance and battery life. It also brings a premium-looking design, a clean user experience and some smart modifications on top the Android experience to the table.

The biggest challenge it faces is pricing. Despite being a touch cheaper than its predecessor, the competition has grown more fierce over the past year and newcomers, primarily from Chinese manufacturers that weren't previously established in Europe now throw their weight around with more impressive specs or lower price tags for equivalent performance.

4. Moto G8 Power
  • $249
If battery life is your main concern the Moto G8 Power is the best budget phone for battery right now, and one of the best for simple software too, with stock Android shipped as standard.

On the downside it’s not much of a looker, it can get a little sluggish, and while the main camera lens is fine the additional shooters - an ultra-wide, telephoto, and macro - don’t add much.

This price point is all about compromises and priorities though, so you’ve got to decide what matters most to you. And if that’s battery, then look no further.

5. Motorola One Action
  • $349
The One Action is yet another decent phone from Motorola with a lot going for it at an affordable price. It's even cheaper than the Moto G7.

You also get better performance and more storage, but this phone has a more niche appeal partly due to its extremely tall (or wide) screen which makes it tricky to hold and use at times.

The Action, as the name suggestions, is also all about the dedicated video camera. While it has good stabiliation and shoots landscape while holiding the phone in portrait, it's capped at 1080p, you can't easily mount it to things and the phone isn't fully waterproof.

6. Motorola One Vision
  • Not available in the US
At less than £300, the Motorola One Vision is certainly appealing. Aside from an eye-catching design and a rather unique finish that gives the Vision a high-end look, the phone sports a decent array of tech.

The FHD+ 6.4in display is gorgeous and the 21:9 aspect ratio is perfect not only for those that enjoy ultra-wide movies on Netflix, but for those with small hands too. And while it’s not perfect, the 48Mp rear-facing camera is capable of taking decent images, especially when used in conjunction with one of the phone’s many shooting modes.

If you’re a media-driven, snap-happy kind of person on a budget, the Motorola One Vision may be the right choice for you.

7. Moto G7 Plus
  • $300
The Moto G7 Plus is a fantastic mid-range phone. You're getting the kind of design, specs and features that you'd expect for a lot more money.

However, we prefer the regular G7 at it's lower price since it still has many of the same features. The G7 Plus doesn't have a larger screen or battery like most plus models. Instead, you're getting more niche things like OIS, faster charging, stereo speakers and Bluetooth 5.0.

Although a faster processor is tempting, phones like the Honor Play blow the G7 Plus out of the water when it comes to performance.

8. Motorola One Macro
  • $169.99
The Motorola One Macro has proved once again that you don't need to spend hundreds of pounds to get a great smartphone.

The display, battery life and speakers are all a pleasant surprise, while the undeniable shortcomings in camera performance shouldn't be a dealbreaker at this price point.

But the highlight is undoubtedly the software. Despite only running Android 9 Pie, this is very much a vanilla version of the software we know and love, free from bloatware.

Motorola's main additions come in the form of some subtle visual tweaks and clever Moto Actions, but both enhance the experience as opposed to taking away from it.

While other phones at this price point might outdo the One Macro on the spec sheet, it's hard to beat if stock Android is your thing.

9. Moto G7 Power
  • $249
With a near-pure Android interface, the G7 Power is a decent alternative to Huawei and Honor's offerings around this price, and its huge battery means a comfortable two-day battery life that can easily be made to stretch to three if needed.

10. Moto G7 Play
  • $200
The G7 Play is a solid smartphone that despite not having high-end internals can provide a smooth, lag-free mobile experience – even when playing demanding games like PUBG Mobile, and that’s impressive. The build quality is great despite the use of plastic on the rear, with fine detailing giving the G7 Play a more premium look.

Of course, there have to be concessions made in a sub-£150 smartphone, and in the case of the G7 Play, that’s the cameras. While images are generally well-lit, the lack of a decent autofocus system means that most of your pictures will come out looking a little bit soft.

Still, if you're not a photographer in-the-making, the Moto G7 Play is an impressive bit of kit and you’ll struggle to find something better at this price point.

11. Moto G8
  • Unavailable
Why is the Moto G8 so far down this list you might be wondering? In truth, it simply doesn't deliver the way its predecessor did.

Motorola cut too much out of the equation with the G8 and what's left is a fairly unimaginative device. It's still decent value-for-money but its main saving grace is superb battery life.

Weigh up your options before forking out for the G8.
