The most popular app to not have a dark mode is finally joining the party

Facebook has finally confirmed that it is working on a dark mode for its mobile app and that the change is rolling out now. The social media giant’s desktop site has a dark mode to strip away the white elements of the app, but until now the mobile app has not followed suit.
Many popular apps have a dark mode these days, including Facebook Messenger, and Android and iOS even have full system modes to run what was white into dark shades that are easier on the eyes and, in the case of phones with OLED screens, save battery life.

SocialMediaToday spotted people reporting a new dark mode option in their Facebook apps and asked Facebook to confirm if the change was finally going global. The company said that the change was for “a small percentage of users globally right now,” so it’s still unclear when every user will get it.
It's also not clear why Facebook has taken so long to bring the function to its app.

Undoubtedly many users don’t know or care about dark modes in general, but they have become a desired feature for many popular apps in tech circles. Keep an eye on the settings of your Facebook app to see if you’re one of the chosen ones.

Update tries to simplify the layout and includes a dark mode option

Facebook has started to roll out its desktop redesign to all users worldwide after trialling it in some regions for some users. The company told TechCruch that “starting today, the majority of people on Facebook will have access to the new desktop design.” While it remains optional for now, it will become compulsory later in the year.

The changes bring in a tabbed look home screen, an optional full page dark mode and an overall cleaner look that futher distances Facebook from the confusing and cluttered versions of the past.

The new UI elements make for a website that looks more round in its elements, with bubble-like boxes in the News Feed and a slightly altered and enlarged font in some menus. The elements are also all centred to the screen rather than running to the left of centre.

The dark mode will be a welcome addition for many people who have got used to dark modes in Windows, macOS or on mobile. The Facebook app is predominantly white, but the new mode changes it to a black/grey view that looks slick and very un-Facebook.

The changes come a couple of weeks after Facebook updated its Messenger app to become simpler to use and less cluttered with features. The company is clearly trying to hone people back to the core Facebook experiences and away from some of the more confusing and convoluted ways the platform was trying to engage its users – mainly by shoving too many options on one screen.
