Candy Cane Hearts

Candy Cane Hearts

Candy canes are a special part of Christmas for me.

They are a required decoration for my Christmas tree every year.

At night after the kids go to bed, I like to get a candy cane off the tree and enjoy it slowly while I’m watching my favorite shows (and usually working on a blog post for you here on the website.)

But that also means I have to keep a stash of candy canes to place back onto the tree every so often so that nobody notices that they’re disappearing.

KEY TO SUCCESS #1 – USE MINI CANDY CANES
This cute and easy recipe uses mini candy canes.

Many times, you can find the mini candy canes individually wrapped at your local grocery store.

They come in a box of about 50 or so.

I prefer the Brachs brand if you can find them. They are always good quality and you won’t often find a lot of broken candy in the box.

If you can’t find mini candy canes at your grocery store, try a store like Walgreens or CVS.

These big pharmacy chains tend to carry a lot of seasonal candy that you can’t find anywhere else.

When you are arranging the candy canes on your waxed paper, you might have to get creative with your matching.

What I mean is sometimes the candy canes are imperfect and may not match the size or shape of each other.

It’s okay if not every candy cane matches perfectly. Just move the candy canes around until you find two that make a pretty heart.

KEY TO SUCCESS #2 – MELT THE ALMOND BARK AND STIR WELL
We’re using white almond bark in this recipe because it melts well and the flavors complement the peppermint very well.

Place the white almond bark in a medium-sized microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave the candy on high power for one minute then stir well.

Continue heating and stirring in 30-second increments until the almond bark is completely melted and smooth.

This heating process should only take maybe 2 minutes total.

You don’t want to overheat the almond bark or it may seize up.

Most of your time should be spent stirring the candy. A good stir will get out many lumps.

You can use a spoon or a spatula to stir the almond bark.

I always use a spoon because I also use a spoon to fill in the candy cane hearts with the almond bark.

KEY TO SUCCESS #3 – FILL THE HEARTS WITH ALMOND BARK
Use a spoon to gently fill the area between the candy canes with white almond bark.

Try not to over-fill the hearts so that the almond bark runs over the top.

Less is more when you are adding the candy. You can always add more but it’s much harder to take some out.

If you have some gaps around the candy canes, use the tip of a knife or a toothpick to spread the almond bark to the edges.

While the white almond bark is still wet, decorate the treats with sprinkles or crushed candy canes or any other decorations you can come up with.

I can’t decide which one I like better.

The sprinkles are really cute and colorful.

But the crushed candy canes are such a classic touch.

I used nonpareils on my candy hearts because they fancy up the treats without overwhelming them.

Which decorations do you like better?
