The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover knows the true meaning of the word “flagship.”

What kind of vehicle is the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover? What does it compare to?
The Range Rover created the luxury-SUV niche now filled with vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, BMW X7, and Cadillac Escalade. The Range Rover remains at the pinnacle; you’d have to spec out a Bentayga or a Cullinan to come close to its prestige, and accept lesser off-road ability.

Is the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover a good SUV?
It’s an exceptional machine with great on- and off-road ability, matched by a serene cabin and a shape that endures design trends with untold patience. It’s aging more than gracefully, and though it’s due to be replaced next year, it still merits a TCC Rating of 7.8 out of 10.

What's new for the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover?
This year, the Range Rover lineup gets pared down to two mild-hybrid inline-6 models and two supercharged V-8s. It’s the finale before a new 2023 Range Rover appears this fall. Though it’s been on the road since 2013, the current SUV has a stoic but elegant grace, with perfectly rendered details and a cabin that warms up brightly when trimmed in traditional materials—or avant garde color schemes.

A mild-hybrid inline-6 with either 355 or 395 hp powers lesser models; it’s quick, but the supercharged V-8 has the throaty roar and 518- or 557-hp output to slingshot the Range Rover to 60 mph in about five seconds. Coupled to an 8-speed automatic, paired with full-time four-wheel drive, and damped by an impressively tuned air suspension, the Range Rover can explore further than its drivers may dare to, whether that’s down a lightly marked trail or deep into a twisted canyon run.

Even the base Range Rover comes clad in plush materials and suited up for five-seat comfort. At its zenith, the Range Rover in four-seat spec has 20-way adjustable seats, refrigerated console coolers, perforated leather upholstery, extra-strength leg room, and more than 75 cubic feet of space for the inevitable custom-crafted luggage. It’s so comfortable it risks making us slightly uncomfortable; in other words, it’s perfectly British.

Range Rovers come standard with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and blind-spot monitors. A surround-view camera system and adaptive cruise control join in as options or as standard on the more expensive models.

How much does the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover cost?
For about $93,000, the base Range Rover has the usual standard features, but we’d opt into a long-wheelbase V-8-powered HSE Westminster for the multi-adjustable front seats and high-output Meridian sound. It’s possible to spend a quarter-million dollars on a Range Rover and leave some options on the table. Don’t say we didn’t egg you on.

Where is the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover made?
In the UK.

Styling

Stately and shapely, the Range Rover outlines luxury.

Is the Land Rover Range Rover a good-looking car?
It’s timeless—good thing, since the current one’s been here since 2013. We give it a 9 here, with two extra points both for the crisp and beautifully detailed exterior and for the subdued but glamorous interior.

Range Rovers don’t change much over time, and the tall greenhouse and slab sides of today’s version aren’t remarkably different from those of five decades ago. It’s the details that matter, like the Range Rover’s side vents that look like touches of grey at the temples, or the steep cant of its windshield. The beauty also comes from a huge variety in colors; for the price of a decade-old Range Rover, a new one can be painted in British Racing Green or an Audi-esque palette of gray.

The austere interior doesn’t come off as breakthrough stuff, but it’s clad in some of the most sumptuous woods and leathers in any SUV. Its pared-down design sinks controls into hidden niches or touchscreen commands, which renders it something like a walled garden—only those who need to be in control, will be in control. It takes some time to warm to, but does warm up fabulously when dressed in vintage tan leather and satin walnut trim.

Performance

Off-road supremacy twins with on-road ease in the Range Rover.

Is the Land Rover Range Rover 4WD?
It’s all-wheel drive, all day, all night, all the time. Land Rover fits the Range Rover with its most sophisticated off-road gear for expert trail-driving, and opens the door to more adventure with an available locking rear differential. It also sells showy 22-inch wheels meant for the street, so careful optioning remains the order of the day.

How fast is the Land Rover Range Rover?
2022 Land Rover Range Rover Review

It’s quick in base trim, insanely quick for an SUV in its fire-breathing editions.

This year, in advance of a complete model change, the Range Rover trims down its powertrain choices, cutting the plug-in hybrid and turbodiesel. Base SUVs now have a mild-hybrid inline-6 with either 355 hp or 395 hp net; we haven’t driven this version, but with similar power-to-weight ratios as past V-6 Range Rovers, these should offer pleasantly sporty acceleration. We’ll drive one in the upcoming redesigned 2023 Range Rover.

We’d still pick the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 in pricey, high-spec Range Rovers. This V-8 charms with its rorty exhaust note and ripping acceleration, whether it’s tuned to 518 hp or to 557 hp in top SVAutobiography trim. That brings 0-60 mph times down to the five-second range.

Both engines coupled to a slick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission and to permanent all-wheel drive.

The Range Rover’s technically complex air suspension adjusts constantly for height and firmness, defaulting to a slightly plush feel even on taut sporty versions that wear short-sidewall tires. The result: gravity-taunting handling. It’s silly to be able to press a Range Rover deep into a tight corner and have it respond so well. Despite a curb weight of about 6,000 pounds at the top end, the Range Rover’s first-rate dynamics and meaty steering acquit it well with top-flight Benz and BMW SUVs. Steering feel is good for a big SUV. It’s not sporty in the conventional sense—it’s far too tall and heavy to earn that adjective—but it hustles down winding roads without much effort and with an almost regal sense of entitlement to do so.

Comfort & Quality

Want to want for nothing? Here’s your SUV.

Though many match its five-seat accommodations and cargo space, few vehicles can come close to the Range Rover’s serene interior. We give it a 10 here.

Chair-like front seats have firm padding and power adjustment; the leather hides conceal available heating, cooling, and massage controls, and high-spec versions have up to 20 ways to soothe aching backs.

The Range Rover lacks for nothing, even in leg room in short-wheelbase versions. Long-wheelbase models lay out about seven inches more for rear-seat passengers—and Executive Seating Package versions soak up that extra space by swapping the second-row bench seat for a pair of power seats and a console that can house drinks or tablet devices. It’s all tailored for high rollers, who can play with the settings via a smartphone app.

Cargo space of 31.5 cubic feet seems modest, and Executive models trim about seven cubic feet from that. Long-wheelbase SUVS with folded-down rear seats offer up about 75 cubic feet of cargo room.

The opulent Range Rover cabin gets better the more you spend. Allocate some cash and time to spend with the numerous paint, leather, wood, and trim choices offered on the most luxurious Range Rovers.

Safety

It’s an open question.

How safe is the Land Rover Range Rover?
It’s uncertain, since the big SUV’s never been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. Each version gets automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, and active lane control, and a surround-view camera system is available.

Features

The RR motto: You don’t have to get plush if you stay plush.

Range Rovers abound in standard features and abide in luxury touches. Every one has all the standard gear we’d want, all the options we could think of, and good infotainment to boot. If it had free maintenance and a lower price tag it would be a 10 here—but it’s an 8.

Which Land Rover Range Rover should I buy?
You could stop with the $93,350 mild-hybrid Range Rover and no options; it comes with a panoramic roof, leather upholstery, power front seats, Meridian sound, and LED headlights. But why be basic? Step up at least to the HSE Westminster edition in short-wheelbase trim and 518-hp V-8 spec. It sports a $114,850 sticker price and cooled front seats, a refrigerated front console, perforated Windsor leather, and parking sensors. That price leaves ample room to spend up with special paint colors, leather packages, and assorted conveniences such as a surround-view camera system.

How much is a fully loaded 2021 Land Rover Range Rover?
You may want to be sitting down when your dealer hands you the bill for a $214,350 SVAutobiography. Fitted with the 557-hp V-8, it can be dolled up with $4,550 of British Racing Green paint, 22-inch wheels, a black contrast roof, vintage tan leather, satin walnut trim, and roof rails, all for about a quarter of a million dollars.

For that price, the Range Rover offers a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, but skips the free maintenance that comes with Jaguars across the lot.

Fuel Economy

The big Range Rover is hardly thrifty, though some versions are somewhat frugal.

Is the Rover Range Rover good on gas?
It’s not. Mild-hybrid inline-6 models score EPA ratings of 19 mpg city, 24 highway, 21 combined—but all other models earn combined ratings below 20 mpg. No plug-ins are available, and the former turbodiesel edition is gone.

The more common V-8 versions check in at 16/21/18 mpg; based on that, the Range Rover’s a 3 here. Get the long-wheelbase SVA—why wouldn’t you?—and fuel economy falls to just 15 mpg combined.
